This one came out of left field.
Left field is probably even an understatement here. Trent Buttrick, a Bloomsburg, PA native who has spent the last two seasons at a prep school in Naples, FL, committed to Penn State this evening.

It's rare that a player without a recruiting profile on any of the major scouting services will commit to a power-conference school, but that's the case here. Buttrick isn't completely unknown, holding recent offers from Air Force and Charlotte, but this is very much a "diamond in the rough" commitment. At least Pat Chambers hopes so, and there's reason to believe Buttrick could see some time early as he fills a major need on Penn State's roster.
The stretch-four position has evolved from a niche role to a major commodity at all levels of basketball in recent years. From watching his highlights, Buttrick checks all of the boxes. He's mobile, he's got adequate athleticism for the high-major level, and he has a good-looking stroke with range. The last attribute is the key for Penn State, as the staff has been looking to fill that need when they lost it in September after Joe Hampton left.
Mid-Season Senior Highlights
Barring another departure, Penn State has its 2017-18 roster set. Buttrick will join a suddenly crowded frontcourt with Satchel Pierce gaining eligibility as the Lions push for an NCAA tournament bid in what will be Chambers' seventh season.
