While I wouldn't say things are back to normal, we are inching closer toward it in terms of college football. Units are even able to practice together again! That is something Penn State did very little of last year, and it showed. Also, fans will return to stadiums across the country as opposed to just in the south. All in all, no matter your opinion of the current climate with Delta Variant, it'll be good to see toe meet leather this weekend if nothing other than to escape for a brief period of time.

Week zero

I won't parse out every single "big" game this weekend like usual, because there aren't any. Watch them all. Enjoy them. I recommend treating it like an NFL dress rehearsal preseason game. Have some beers for the first half of a game, take it seriously, then coast the rest of the day. The "best" choices for this are Nebraska - Illinois at 1 on FOX, or Hawaii - UCLA at 3:30 on ESPN. The latter is a great choice to honor fallen legendary broadcaster Robert Kekaula, who passed away in June. I remember many nights in college in the mid-2000s coming home from downtown and watching Hawaii light up the scoreboard with him announcing every game. His voice will truly be missed.

espn high school football showcase

College football isn't the only thing kicking off this weekend, as High School football gets its showcase as well. There are a few Penn State commits and targets to watch, if you are into watching the future.

  • District Heights (Md.) St. Frances Academy vs. Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas: Saturday 12pm ESPN - Penn State target Jaishawn Barham and St. Frances Academy take on one of the perennial powerhouses in St. Thomas Aquinas. Barham has announced a top 4 of Florida, Maryland, Penn State, and South Carolina. The crystal ball predictions point to the Gamecocks as of today.
  • IMG Academy (Fla.) vs Bishop Sycamore (Ohio) Sunday August 29 12pm ESPN - Speaking of perennial powerhouses, IMG has an insane amount of talent for both 2022 and 2023 classes, including a current Penn State commit. Kaytron Allen looked explosive last week tallying 227 yards and 3 touchdowns in the opener.
