What an environment Saturday was. It was my first time back in Happy Valley since a whiteout loss in 2018 that I am still not ready to talk about. It wasn't the loudest crowd I have been a part of, but it was active, engaged, and made a difference. The student section was so active, that my friend I took was convinced that the students get punished if they stop cheering because they just didn't stop for four quarters. Let's hope State just stays healthy and we have a boring day Saturday. Anyway, conference games are getting into full swing starting this weekend, but there are still a couple of intriguing non-conference games to watch. Here is your guide for week 4.

Thursday

  • Marshall @ App State 7:30 ESPN - A rematch of one of the most entertaining 17-7 games you will ever see last year kicks off the Thursday night games in earnest. App State has revenge on their mind, and Marshall is looking to bounce back after blowing a 17 point fourth-quarter lead last week to East Carolina.

Friday

  • Wake Forest @ Virginia 7:00 ESPN2 - If you enjoy points, this is the game for you. Sam Hartman facing off against Brennan Armstrong is one of the more intriguing quarterback matchups of the young season. If you haven't heard of Brennan Armstrong, all he has done in three games is throw for 1,298 yards and 11 touchdowns. This should be a fun one.
  • Liberty @ Syracuse 8:00 ACCN - This is the game last year that got everyone's attention in a good way for Liberty and a bad way for Dino Babers and Syracuse. Liberty is once again off to a hot start, and this could be the final nail in Baber's coffin.

Saturday

  • #12 Notre Dame vs. #18 Wisconsin 12:00 FOX - Gameday heads to Chicago for the marquee rock fight of the weekend that has more than just a "top-25 matchup" intrigue. Jack Coan will be looking for some revenge against the team that tossed him aside for a younger higher upside quarterback in Graham Mertz. Things haven't quite panned out as Wisconsin has hoped, but they still have a great defense and a really good running game to fall back on. I'd expect a similar score to the one we saw in week one, and let's hope Wisconsin is on the winning side this time.
  • LSU @ Mississippi State 12:00 ESPN - LSU has since bounced back to win two straight after getting slapped by UCLA opening week, but the competition ratchets back up as conference play starts. Mississippi State has been up and down early, but this game should be competitive.
  • Texas Tech @ Texas 12:00 ABC - Tech ain't played nobody, but they do sit at 3-0 with an opportunity to open some eyes in the state of Texas. If that happens, Sark's honeymoon period will officially be over.
  • #7 Texas A&M @ #16 Arkansas 3:30 CBS - If Arkansas can sweep their tour of Texas I think they can legally adopt the Texas state flag as their school flag until 2022. While I think Arkansas is a tad overrated, I also think the same of A&M, who has struggled to put points on the board this far. The good news for them is that when your defense gives up 5.7 points per game, points don't matter. As good as the Arkansas offense is, I still expect this to be a fairly low-scoring affair.
  • #9 Clemson @ NC State 3:30 ESPN - A lot of people believe this is the only game standing in the way of Clemson being 12-1. While I personally believe NC State is trash, Clemson has looked like a team that should barely be in the top-25 let alone top-10, so maybe people are right. Clemson is going to have to continue to rely on their defense because DJ Uiagalelei has looked downright awful at times taking over for Trevor Lawrence.
  • #14 Iowa State @ Baylor 3:30 FOX - This is my upset pick of the week. Iowa State's offense is downright awful, and Baylor has been doing Baylor things scoring points in bunches early on in the season. Simply put, Brock Purdy needs to be a lot better than he has been if Iowa State is going to win this one on the road.
  • Rutgers @ #19 Michigan 3:30 ABC - It's not gonna happen but seriously HOW FUNNY WOULD IT BE?!
  • #24 UCLA @ Stanford 6:00 PAC12 - Stanford really found their footing again after stumbling out of the gate week 1. This is the first of two huge games for the Cardinal as Oregon comes to town next week. UCLA is looking for a solid bounce-back game after falling to Fresno State last week.
  • Tennessee @ #11 Florida 7:00 ESPN - Florida really surprised me last week. I thought they were going to get blown out. Tennessee is looking to make a case for moral victories not meaning anything, but The Swamp will be rocking on Saturday night.
  • Nebraska @ #20 Michigan State 7:00 FS1 - Speaking of teams that surprised last week, both Nebraska and Michigan State had great showings against higher-ranked opponents. Nebraska is still trash, but last week they were at least trash in like, a gated community or something. The game in East Lansing for Penn State is starting to look a little more worrisome.
  • West Virginia @ #4 Oklahoma 7:30 ABC - The Spencer Rattler hype has turned in to "start Caleb Williams" awfully quick, hasn't it? Even at 3-0 Oklahoma fans are already moving on from the former five-star. Must be nice to just have another five-star waiting in the wings, though. Anyway, West Virginia comes to town fresh off a top-15 win against Virginia Tech and is looking to knock off another ranked team. I expect another close game for Oklahoma and more calls for the backup by the end of the night.
  • A note on #PAC12AfterDark, there are several choices this week, and I can't recommend any of them unless you are a sicko like me.
