Penn State forward Satchel Pierce has been ruled academically ineligible for the first semester of the 2018-19 basketball season.

A fifth-year senior, Pierce averaged 1.6 points and rebounds per game in 7.2 minutes per game. It was his first season in action for the Nittany Lions after transferring in from Virginia Tech.

While the seven-footer wasn't expected to have a big role this upcoming season, the Nittany Lions will be a bit thin in the post in his absence. Junior Mike Watkins is the clear-cut starter and sophomore John Harrar played well towards the end of his freshman campaign as his backup. Sophomore Trent Buttrick could see increased minutes in Pierce's absence.

If he is able to get his grades in order, Pierce's first game back could be Penn State's game with NC State in Atlantic City on December 15.
