Penn State basketball got some much needed good news on Monday night when forward Mike Watkins announced he will return to school for his redshirt senior season.

The big man had a bit of a down season last year, averaging careers lows in both points (7.8) and rebounds (7.4) while starting just 14 games.

He missed nearly the entire first month of the season after a pair of legal issues over the offseason, before opening up on his struggles with his mental health. He never seemed to fully get back in basketball shape, so hopefully, a fresh offseason will allow him to rediscover his form as one of the best bigs in the conference. Regardless, he will play a pivotal role and will give the Nittany Lions one of the most experienced frontcourts in the Big Ten.

The Nittany Lions are still waiting to see if Lamar Stevens will return for senior season after declaring for the NBA Draft and guard Rasir Bolton more recently entered his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal. If both opt to return for one more season, the Nittany Lions will head into the season as an expected tournament team.
