It's always good when you kick a recruiting class off with a quarterback. That's exactly what happened when Penn State picked up a commitment from Sean Clifford. The Ohio native was the first commit in the Nittany Lions' 2017 class, kicking this recruiting class off with a bang and giving the team a signal caller to build around going forward.

Scouting Report

Here is every skill Sean Clifford does not possess:

1. He probably can't throw a football 100 yards in the air.

That's kind of it.

Clifford is one of the nation's most well-rounded quarterback prospects. The Ohio native has everything – he's accurate, he's mobile, he's smart, and while he doesn't possess a cannon, he has a strong arm capable of pushing the ball down the field.

The only question with Clifford is how he'll bounce back from surgery on his right shoulder. If he does? Well, then James Franklin has his signal-caller of the future.

Moving Forward

Clifford is getting redshirted. This is the easiest prediction to make out of everyone in Penn State's 2017 recruiting class.

This is not to say that Clifford isn't good – actually, quite the opposite, he is really good and has the potential to be Penn State's next great quarterback. But Penn State's quarterback depth chart is loaded, and it's really hard to see him beating out Trace McSorley or Tommy Stevens (hell, even Jake Zembiec) barring something catastrophic happening.

He's getting a red light this year. It would be a bit of a surprise for him to start next year, too. Odds are we won't see Clifford before 2019, and that's perfectly fine. He has a bright future ahead of him.
