Despite being interested in Penn State before the season began, the Nittany Lions' Big Ten-winning season in 2016 really helped draw K.J. Hamler to State College. The elusive, game-breaking wide receiver eventually chose Penn State over Oregon and home-town Michigan State. This was a huge win for James Franklin and his staff, not only because Hamler is an extraordinary talent, but because he also represents a successful recruitment of an IMG Academy athlete.

Scouting Report

Hamler is going to frustrate a lot of defensive players over the course of his collegiate career. Though the four-star receiver has great speed, its his quickness that really sets him apart from his competition. His ability to move in and out of cuts makes him a great route runner, and his blazing fast feet make him a nightmare to try and tackle in the open field. He's also a stud return man, and may get first crack at punt return duties once he's deemed fully healthy (he missed his senior season at IMG with a torn ACL).

Size is really the only thing keeping Hamler from being even more highly-touted. He'll never be a 50/50 ball type of receiver, but he's a player who will constantly find the open space over the middle of the field, and will look to take it to the house every time he touches the ball. He could also be a weapon on jet sweeps and wide receiver screens.

Moving Forward

Thanks to the previously torn ACL, Hamler is likely set for a redshirt to make sure he is fully healed. The wide receiver depth chart is also fairly full for the 2017 season, so the staff has some time to let their diminutive dynamo get back to 100%. However, if he's able to fully practice before the season ends and shows off what he can do as a return man, the staff may consider letting him take charge in the punt return game if their other options prove unsuccessful.
