C.J. Thorpe was one of the first members of the Penn State Class of 2017, committing back in April of 2016. After a dominant senior season and standout performance at the Under Armour All-America game, he has become one of the top offensive line prospects in the nation.

C.J. Thorpe

Scouting Report

The first thing that jumps out about Thorpe is that he is a very large person. He is every bit of 6'3 and 318 pounds. That translates into great strength, especially in the running game. As with most very large people that play offensive line in high school, though, Thorpe will need to improve his technique as he begins to match-up with better athletes.

Under James Franklin, Penn State has leaned towards offensive linemen that were not necessarily only a center, guard, or tackle prospect. Thorpe is most definitely the exception to that trend, however. He is a guard prospect all the way, and adds tremendous depth to what is already a solid-looking offensive line for the Lions.

Moving Forward

Between Thorpe's need to improve technique, Penn State's relatively stacked depth chart on the interior line and James Franklin's preference to redshirt offensive line prospects, it would be a big surprise to see Thorpe playing in 2017. However, given his rapid improvement over the course of his senior season with Central Catholic, don't be surprised to see him pushing for time in 2018 as a redshirt freshman.
