After struggling to sign a blue chip defensive tackle in recent years, Penn State landed one of the top targets in the region in the talented New Jersey-native Fred Hansard, flipping the four-star prospect from Florida in late-November in what he called a "perfect opportunity."

Fred Hansard
Position: Defensive Tackle

High School: Hun School (Nj.)
247Composite Rank: ★★★★(0.9171)
Positional Rank: No. 207 Overall, No. 11 Defensive Tackle, No. 4 in New Jersey
Commitment Date: November 27, 2016

Scouting Report

In many ways, Fred Hansard is the prototypical blue chip defensive tackle prospect. He's big (6'3", 310 lbs.), strong, and disturbingly quick for someone his size. Those things, however, can also make it tough to figure out how a lineman projects at the next level.

Much like C.J. Thorpe another large lineman in this class (albeit on the offensive side), the improvement Hansard showed during his senior year at The Hun School shows great promise for his future. His technique will still need refinement, but he has all of the tools to be a very good defensive tackle for the Lions.

Moving Forward

Much like offensive linemen, James Franklin and Sean Spencer have been big proponents of redshirting their defensive linemen upon arrival in Happy Valley. The Lions' depth at tackle, while not made up of big name recruits, performed well in 2016, and figures to be even better in 2017. Hansard could make things interesting with a solid fall camp, but all signs point to a redshirt. He stated in an interview with Lions247 that he was fine with whatever the coaching staff asks of him this fall.
