Welcome to National Signing Day 2017 here at Roar Lions Roar. Make sure to check out all of our other Signing Day coverage today and in the coming days, and make sure to check out each profile of the newest Nittany Lions as they come in. (All photos you see below are courtesy of 247Sports)

Jonathan Sutherland is the latest Penn State recruit to hail from the Great White North. Sutherland played his high school football in Alexandria, Va., but calls Ottawa, Ontario home. The four-star safety prospect also fills a big need in the Class of 2017.

Scouting Report

Sutherland is one of my favorite types of football players. He doesn't stand out with world class speed, and he isn't the biggest guy on the field. He is, however, one of the smartest football players in Penn State's recruiting class, allowing him to play much faster than a track time.

He is also exceptionally aggressive defending the run from his safety spot, and a solid tackler. That aggressiveness can occasionally get him in trouble against the pass, but most coaches would rather try to tone down an aggressive player, than to create one. Marcus Allen should be a fantastic role model for Sutherland.

Moving Forward

Sutherland has a shot to play right away with plenty of uncertainty in who will line up next to Marcus Allen in 2017 in Malik Golden's vacated spot. Troy Apke, Nick Scott, and Ayron Monroe all have an inside track on the spot, but given how backups fared when Golden was off of the field, it would be fair to consider that spot open. The odds say Sutherland takes a redshirt with so many options ahead of him both in age and experience, but there is definitely an opportunity there.
