When Philadelphia Catholic League offensive tackle Desmond Holmes verbally committed to Penn State last August, the recruiting news cycle covered it, analyzed it and then, well, went rather quiet. Holmes, a three-star prospect from Cardinal O'Hara with offers from Maryland, Pitt, Syracuse and Temple didn't draw the breathless headlines and updates of some of his fellow 2017 classmates. However, Holmes has the measurements, attitude and ability to be a key force along the offensive line for Penn State.

Scouting Report

Holmes is big. He's tall and built, and it stands out on tape. An all-state selection his senior year, Holmes shows a distinct love for engaging defenders with his long arms and snowplowing them down the field; or, in some cases, directly into the field.

Holmes, who spent years honing his skills in the talent-heavy and competitive Philadelphia Catholic League, played left tackle in high school and could have a chance to play there for the Nittany Lions, though guard seems the likely destination right now. Offensive line coach Matt Limegrover drastically improved the Lions' front five in 2016, employing a mixture of technique, versatility and desperation (when injuries necessitated shifting players around). Even so, Penn State finished 11-3 and put up eye-popping offensive numbers. Holmes could be a versatile piece for Limegrover and the offense.

Moving Forward

The Springfield, Pa.-native likely is headed toward a redshirt season with all the young OL talent immediately ahead of him on the depth chart: Michal Menet, Will Fries, Connor McGovern and Ryan Bates. Then there's the talent in his own class, including early enrollee Michael Miranda and four-star CJ Thorpe.

Unless 2017 becomes a mirror image of 2016, with a string of unfortunate injuries along the offensive line, Holmes will be safely stashed away for a redshirt year.
