Penn State's special teams unit received good news on Sunday, as James Franklin's staff picked up its potential new kicker of the future in a new verbal commit, Jake Pinegar.
The Lions first encountered Pinegar at their camp at Northern Illinois and then invited him back to take part in the camp this past Friday. Clearly, the staff liked what they saw, and Pinegar pulled the trigger a few days later.
The Pinegar File
- Class: 2018
- Size: 6'3/195 lbs.
- Pos: K
- School: Ankeny Centennial (Ankeny, IA)
- Composite Rating: NR (★★★★★ on Kohl's Kicking)
- Composite Rank: No. 13 kicker (Kohl's Kicking)
Pinegar currently holds offers from Indiana, Bowling Green, Northern Illinois, and Western Illinois, though specialists tend to reel in more offers the closer it gets to signing day when teams have a better idea of how many spots they have left, which positions they need to fill, etc.
Pinegar is currently ranked as the No. 13 kicker by Kohl's Kicking. Here's their blurb on him:
Pinegar recently attended the 2017 Midwest Spring Showcase. He is one of the best athletes in the 2018 class. He has explosive hips and fast leg. He charted well by making 9 field goals and also averaged 71.75 yards per kickoff. Having the ability to call on his "A" ball will need to be a focus this summer. His "A" ball on kickoffs, is in the top 5 nationally. Pinegar attended the 2016 Winter Showcase Camp in December. He charted very well going 8 out of 10 on field goals. He shows great control of his leg and with continued work on his leg strength he will do some special things as a specialist.
According to Lions247, Pinegar also earned all-state honors for his work as a defensive back. He is also a standout soccer player (all-conference) and hurdler (6th in the state in the 110-meter hurdles).
Pinegar is the 18th member of the 2018 recruiting class, which is currently ranked No. 3 in the country. Pinegar is the fourth commitment of the weekend for Penn State.
