For the fourth time in the last five days, the Penn State 2019 recruiting class has grown by one, and what a big one it is. Five-star Virginia linebacker Brandon Smith has announced his verbal commitment to the Nittany Lions. He announced the decision during a ceremony Monday afternoon at his high school.

Smith held offers from a who's who of college football powers. In addition to Penn State, he was being pursued by the likes of Ohio State, Clemson, Alabama, Notre Dame, and just about everyone else. The Nittany Lions have long been considered the favorite, but Smith did officially visit Texas A&M last month, in addition to unofficial visits to a number of other programs over the last year.
Penn State extended their offer to the blue chip prospect back in April of 2017 during Blue-White weekend. That was the second of what would be six visits to Happy Valley over the last 14 months.
Smith not only brings immense talent to the Nittany Lions, but fills a huge need at linebacker. Expect to see him get a significant look as a freshman.
The seven member class now sits at No. 17 nationally, just ahead of Minnesota's 11 member class. The seven current commitments make the group the smallest class among the top-17.
