Penn State has not been shy about wanting to take a second quarterback in recent recruiting classes if the right fit came along. Despite four-star Taquan Roberson committing in late-2017, James Franklin kept up his pursuit of a second signal caller, ultimately finding that right fit in Michael Johnson Jr., one of the nation's best dual-threat quarterbacks.

Michael Johnson Jr.
Position: Dual-threat quarterback
Height/Weight: 6'2.5/192 lbs.
High School: Sheldon (OR)

RLR's Take

Two quarterbacks in one class are always bound to raise an eyebrow or two, but Johnson knew fellow commit Roberson was already on board when he committed in August. Johnson, the son of Oregon wide receivers coach Michael Johnson Sr., brings elite athleticism to the fold, but his passing game is still catching up. If he can put it all together, the Nittany Lions have a gem.

Moving Forward

Red light.

This one is easy. Tommy Stevens is the heir apparent in 2019, with Sean Clifford and Will Levis set to backup. Come 2020, however, expect a free-for-all as those two join Johnson and Roberson in a quest to earn the starting job. If there is one thing that distinguishes Johnson, it is his ability when the play breaks down. You cannot teach what he can do with the ball in his hands.
