Hopefully, this starts a little momentum for Penn State on the recruiting front heading into the Blue-White Game. The Nittany Lions have netted a commitment from 2020 three-star offensive guard Golden Achumba (Hyattsville, Md.).

James Franklin & Co. didn't offer Achumba until Feb. 9, so this one moved quickly. It took just under two months for Achumba to decide Penn State is where he would continue his football career.

The achumba File

  • Class: 2020
  • Size: 6-4/320
  • Pos: OG
  • School: DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD)
  • Composite Rating: ★★★
  • Composite Rank: No. 497 overall (No. 24 OG)

His biggest offers, aside from Penn State, included Maryland, Oklahoma, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech. Oklahoma and especially Maryland were pushing hard for Achumba. Given his DeMatha connection, this is one Maryland surely wanted to keep home.

Achumba made his way to Penn State's campus twice in 2018, once for an unofficial visit and once for a camp. When Penn State finally offered in February 2019, Achumba made a return trip on March 27th. That was all he needed to decide on his future.

Achumba is commit No. 6 for Penn State in their 2020 class, bringing the class to No. 13 nationally and fourth in the B1G.

He comes to Penn State as a pretty physically imposing guard and is perfectly built to play the position. He comes off the ball with a sense of violence and punishment, and his initial punch is outstanding. But given DeMatha's focus on the run game, he's not asked to do much in pass protection so he'll have to prove he can be nimble enough on his feet to thrive in the at the college level.
