Penn State continues to add to its 2020 class, this time with the commitment of standout Virginia safety Elijah Gaines.
Gaines has been on the Penn State radar for quite some time. It wasn't until recently, however, that the Lions seemed to make a move. He made his first visit to campus back in June and returned just two weeks ago to take in the 17-10 victory over Penn State on an official visit. If there was any doubt how big of a priority he had become for the staff, James Franklin and Ja'Juan Seider paid a visit to Episcopal High School last week to seemingly seal the deal.
The Gaines File
- Class: 2020
- Size: 6'2/193 lbs
- Pos: S
- School: Episcopal (Alexandria, VA)
- Composite Rating: ★★★ (0.8702)
- Composite Rank: #597 Overall (#15 in Virginia)
Gaines is not short on suitors either, earning offers from a host of Big Ten and ACC programs, including North Carolina, Virginia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Pitt, Purdue, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and Wisconsin.
Gaines is the 26th player to commit to the Penn State class of 2020 and the third safety to join the class along with four-star Michigander Enzo Jennings, and three-star JUCO Ji'Ayir Brown. These three will do their best to fix up a safety room that will need some stability once the current safeties move on. With these three big-time talents on the roster, they should be able to find a creative, in-house solution to filling the space Garrett Taylor and company will leave behind.
The Nittany Lions remain the No. 14-ranked class in the country with the commitment of Gaines according to 247Sports, and No. 3 in the Big Ten.
