Penn State once again heads down into Virginia to land a high-end talent, this time landing 2023 tight end Mathias Barnwell.
Barnwell has had the attention of the Penn State staff as early as you possibly could, receiving his offer in October of 2019, his freshman season. That came in the week following his visit to Happy Valley for the Whiteout game vs. Michigan.

Barnwell held offers from Penn State, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, USC, Nebraska, and Ole Miss, among others. His final three included PSU, VT, and Tennessee. The Hokies in particular seemed to be the Lions' leading competition.
Tyler Bowen has spearheaded Barnwell's recruitment. The staff got him on campus for the aforementioned Whiteout, along with a Junior Day this past February. With those two visits, Happy Valley is Barnwell's most frequented destination. Virginia Tech was the only other school to get him on campus when he made his way to Blacksburg in March, right before the Covid-19 shutdown.
Barnwell is commit No. 1 for Penn State's 2023 class, and he'll likely be alone in that class for quite some time. While he moves really well given his size and age, there's a better-than-zero chance that he'll continue growing and end up simply to large to stay at tight end. With his current athletic base, he would have the foundation to be one of the best offensive tackle prospects in the country.
