While there have been some struggles in the Keystone State, Penn State continues to build on its recruiting pipeline in Michigan.

The Nittany Lions have landed a commitment from four-star outside linebacker Jamari Buddin from Belleville in the Great Lakes State. Buddin is the 305th ranked player and 20th ranked outside linebacker in the 247Sports composite.

he Buddin File

  • Class: 2021
  • Size: 6'2/210
  • Pos: OLB
  • School: Belleville, (Belleville, MI)
  • Composite Rating: ★★★★ (.8970)
  • Composite Rank: No. 305 overall, No. 20 OLB

Penn State seemed to gain momentum in recent months in Buddin’s recruitment, and were ultimately able to beat out home-state Michigan State for his verbal commitment. Along with the Spartans, Minnesota was considered the other finalist. The Lions were able to get him onto campus in early-February, just prior to the pre-scheduled dead period, which proved critical when recruiting was essentially shut down just weeks later due to Covid-19. That visit marked his second trip to Happy Valley. The first came in October of 2019 when he made his way to town for the Whiteout victory over Michigan.

247Sports, which ranks Buddin as the No. 23 OLB in their own rankings has this to say about the newest member of Linebacker U:

Long and lean. Looks good on the hoof but still needs to fill in. Plays bigger than listed weight. Hard hitter who takes on blocks with good leverage and physicality. Good lateral quickness and that allows him to be effective in coverage. Good blitzer who accelerates and runs hard as a close. Has to fill in and get stronger. Playmaker who can play inside or outside in college depending on how his body continues to develop. Aggressiveness and agility are at a high level and should allow him to be an effective Power 5 linebacker and have a shot to play beyond college.

Buddin will join a loaded linebacker room next year that should include former five-stars Brandon Smith, Curtis Jacobs, and Lance Dixon. Even with the expected departure of Micah Parsons to the 2021 NFL Draft, the Penn State linebacker room looks to be in good shape for years to come. Buddin is the second linebacker commit in the Nittany Lions’ Class of 2021, joining three-star inside linebacker Kobe King, another of PSU's pledges out of the Detroit area.

The Nittany Lion Class of 2021 now stands at 13 members. Including Buddin, a half dozen are four-star prospects. The group moves up to No. 25 nationally.
