The Detroit area has been kind to James Franklin and Co. over the years and that is the case once again, with the Nittany Lions landing four-star safety Jaylen Reed.

RLR's Take

Jaylen Reed is exactly the kind of safety James Franklin has loved to recruit during his time in Happy Valley. Already weighing in at 190, he has good size to come up and help in run support and has better than average ball skills that will help him limit big plays in the passing game. A remarkably sound tackler for someone of his age, it's easy to envision him playing in the box on obvious passing downs and being the kind of player that running backs hate being tackled by.

Another thing that really jumps out on film is how quickly he's able to diagnose plays. It's clear he understands the ins and outs of the game, something that will give him a leg up when competing for playing time.

Moving Forward

As things look right now, the Nittany Lions will have just three non-freshmen safeties on scholarship in 2021. That could change if Jaquan Brisker opts to take advantage of the free year of eligibility, but there will be playing time to be had, regardless. There is a path to Reed getting playing time as a true freshman and taking control of starting a job as early as 2022. He's the perfect player to take advantage of the four-game rule, giving the staff a nice long look at what exactly they have in the Detroit native.

Long term, Reed will be a multi-year starter in Happy Valley and has all the makings of a stalwart in Penn State's secondary.
