Penn State clearly liked what they saw in three-star wide receiver Tyler Johnson when he worked out for them this month. The Virginia native got the green light from the staff and soon after a few trips to Happy Valley, has committed to the Nittany Lions.
Johnson was offered by Penn State back in May but it was clear the staff wanted to see the pass catcher in person before giving him the go-ahead. He made his way to campus on June 16 so he could work out for the staff. He must have impressed on that trip because he quickly returned to campus that very Friday for an official visit. Those two trips to Penn State were his only visits throughout the process.
The Johnson File
- Class: 2022
- Size: 6'0/175 lbs.
- Pos: WR
- School: Magna Vista (Ridgeway, VA)
- 247 Rating: ★★★
- 247 Rank: No. 95 WR
He's a bit of an unheralded prospect with the state of Virginia not playing high school football in the fall hurting scout's ability to evaluate the receiver. However, Johnson's recruitment took off in the spring with a huge run of offers for the Magna Vista product. Boston College, Duke, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Maryland, and Purdue all offered Johnson over the past few months.
Johnson is the fourth receiver for Penn State in the 2022 class, although Harrisburg's Mekhi Flowers could play safety at the next level.
This is commitment No. 12 for Penn State's 2022 class, with the class holding steady as the No. 7 class in the country.
