Penn State quarterback commit Drew Allar

Penn State has felt like they're an elite quarterback away from breaking through into the College Football Playoffs. Although he'll have to prove it on the field once he arrives in Happy Valley, Drew Allar looks like the answer for James Franklin. Allar has earned his fifth star and is now the No. 1-ranked quarterback (and No. 12 overall) in the entire 2022 Class, per the 247Sports rankings.

Landing a five-star quarterback can launch a program into another stratosphere. It attracts other top recruits for several classes and can snowball into a consistently great program for years to come.

Allar is a dream come true for Penn State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. At almost 6'5 and 230 pounds, he is surprisingly agile and can escape the pocket when necessary but his arm is what will excite fans the most. He throws the ball with tremendous velocity and makes throws to every part of the field look easy. Allar also looks fantastic rolling out of the pocket and throwing on the run, and has shown an ability to throw from several different arm angles.

Even with a quarterback as successful as Trace McSorley was at Penn State, a player like Allar simply has a higher ceiling that allows a play-caller to open up the entire playbook. A coordinator like Yurcich, who likes to air it out, surely can't wait to get Allar into the quarterback room and see what he's truly capable of.

Allar still trails Christian Hackenberg as the highest-rated quarterback recruit in school history, but there also remains time for that to change before the 2022 rankings are officially official.
