Penn State has done an outstanding job in building its 2022 recruiting class to this point. Now it gets even better as one of its top targets regardless of position, athlete Mehki Flowers, has announced his verbal commitment to the Nittany Lions.
Flowers has been on the Penn State radar for a long time. As a Harrisburg-native, he's been someone the staff has been keeping tabs on for basically his entire high school career. He originally earned his offer back in June of 2019 while camping in University Park, and proceeded to attend another camp in late June of the same year, and then visited campus in late August and mid-October.
The Flowers File
- Class: 2022
- Size: 6'1/187lbs.
- Pos: ATH (WR/S)
- School: Steelton-Highspire (Harrisburg, PA)
- Composite Rating: ★★★★ (0.9457)
- Composite Rank: #121 Overall (#4 in Pennsylvania)
Flowers holds a number of offers, including Arizona State, Cincinnati, Kentucky, Nebraska, Pitt, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia. However, Flowers has been a heavy Penn State lean for a long time. It certainly appears to be the case that other programs simply haven't deemed it worthwhile to send him scholarship offers because of how clear it was that he was destined to be a Nittany Lion.
Flowers is a supremely-talented player and a very versatile one. Though most expect him to end up at wide receiver in Happy Valley, he is a very impressive safety prospect, as well. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the coaching staff at least try him out on both sides of the ball. Considering that Penn State seems to have at least two standout freshmen receivers on campus in Parker Washington and KeAndre Lambert-Smith, a solid group coming on board in 2021 and that the 2022 class already has two receivers, the opportunity to be flexible with Flowers position-wise is there.
Brian Dohn of 247Sports is high on Flowers as well and projects him as a future 2nd or 3rd round NFL Draft pick.
Has frame and offers position versatility. Has skill set to play receiver or safety. Can easily carry 210 pounds. Is usually the best athlete on high school field by wide margin. Changes direction well. Has speed and burst. Can close as safety and pull away as receiver. Agile and athletic. Excellent body control. Tough for defenders to get clean shot in space. Possesses field awareness. Is physical and plays with attitude. Can impact in return game. As receiver, has to work on release off line. Continued strength development important. Work on backpedal as safety needed. Multi-year starter at Top 10 program. Day 2 NFL draft potential.
Flowers becomes the eighth member of the 2022 class, which now ranks as the No. 2 class nationally. He is the eighth blue-chip recruit to join the class and the fifth from the state of Pennsylvania (along with Shelton, Ken Talley, Anthony Ivey, and Beau Pribula).
With eight members on board, the Nittany Lions have the second-largest 2022 recruiting class (trailing only Ohio State) There is still a ton of time to go in this recruiting cycle, but James Franklin and his staff are doing an excellent job to this point.
