Three-star Penn State safety commit Kevin Winston Jr.

Maryland has been very good to Penn State over the years when it comes to sending elite talent to Happy Valley. The latest to make the trip will be Kevin Winston Jr. The three-star prospect has announced his verbal commitment to the Nittany Lions.

Winston, who is entering his senior year at DeMatha Catholic in Maryland will be the third Stag alumnus on the roster. He joins offensive lineman Golden Israel-Achumba and defensive tackle Coziah Izzard are both redshirt freshmen.

The Winston File

  • Class: 2022
  • Size: 6'2/190
  • Pos: S
  • School: DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD)
  • Composite Rating: ★★★ (.8678)
  • Composite Rank: No. 45 S (No. 646 overall)

Penn State was one of the first schools to offer Winston, doing so in May of last year. He took four visits in June, making trips to Louisville, Michigan State, Penn State, and Maryland. He was supposed to take a trip to Notre Dame but canceled to participate in a 7-on-7 tournament with his high school. He was originally was set to announce his commitment in August but moved up his decision following his Maryland visit.

At 6'2/190, he's built to play a Marcus Allen-esque type of safety. He has better ball skills than the now-Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker, but he hits in a similar fashion. He'll need to add at least 15 pounds to his frame but there is a chance he can push for early playing time.

Winston is commit No. 23 for Penn State in the 2022 class. The Nittany Lions stand firm with the the No. 2 class in the nation.
