RLR's Take

Abdul Carter's ceiling is likely dependent on the position he lines up in the Blue and White. As a linebacker, many of Carter's strengths shine through. He has elite athleticism given his size and those traits show when he is out in the open field and chasing players sideline to sideline. However, as a linebacker, he is still learning how to navigate blockers, fill gaps, and needs to be more confident in identifying plays. Essentially, he needs to learn how to be a linebacker and not a jumbo athlete.

Those strengths could shine at defensive end, however, where he'd also mask some of those "weaknesses." His athleticism and generally aggressive playstyle when attacking the line of scrimmage, along with his size and length, lend themselves to an outstanding end.

Moving Forward

Carter is most likely looking at a redshirt as a true freshman. He's currently a bit of a tweener but simply due to the need to establish what position provides the highest ceiling. Physically, Carter could potentially be ready for Big Ten play as a linebacker but would need some size and strength to play at defensive end. It's likely he starts his career as a linebacker before transitioning to defensive end as his body matures.

Welcome to Penn State, Abdul.
