Part of the crazy summer of commitments for Penn State, Kaleb Artis is looking to become the next impact defensive tackle for the Lions.

Kaleb Artis
Position: Defensive line
Height/Weight: 6'4/290 lbs.
High School: St. Francis Prep School (Fresh Meadows, NY)
247Composite Rank: ★★★(0.8742)
Positional Rank: No. 578 Overall, No. 81 Defensive lineman, No. 2 in New York
Commitment Date: July 4, 2021

RLR's Take

Don't let the No. 578 overall rank fool you — getting Artis was a big win for James Franklin's staff. The New York prospect was courted by several other big names, including Auburn, Florida State, Notre Dame, and Texas, but ultimately chose the Nittany Lions,

Artis is the only player in the 2022 class who you can almost surely peg as a defensive tackle, which speaks to how highly the staff thinks of him and his potential. His size allows him to easily brush aside high school linemen at this point, especially in New York where the competition isn't necessarily the best, but the potential for greatness is very clear in Artis' play.

Moving Forward

Unlike defensive end, Penn State does have a good bit of depth at defensive tackle. PJ Mustipher still has the option to return if he wants to, Hakeem Beamon is expected back in 2022, Dvon Ellies and Coziah Izzard both gained a ton of experience in 2021, and there are several other names such as Cole Brevard working towards getting a shot as well.

More simply, if Artis wants to get on the field early, he'll really have to set himself apart from the crowd. That's not to say that Penn State's current defensive tackles are sure things outside of Mustipher if he returns, but there are a lot of names for him to compete with. Most likely, year one will be more focused on the weight room and the scout team for Artis.

Welcome to Penn State, Kaleb.
