Three-star 2023 cornerback Lamont Payne has committed to Penn State, giving the Nittany Lions one of the top players from the west side of the Commonwealth.
The Nittany Lions offered Payne in April of this year and the 6'1 corner made more than a few trips to Happy Valley throughout his recruitment. He visited twice in June, once in July, and is on campus this weekend for the Whiteout.
The Payne File
- Class: 2023
- Size: 6'1/170
- Pos: CB
- School: Chartiers Valley (Bridgeville, PA)
- Composite Rating: ★★★
- Composite Rank: No. 39 CB (No. 308 overall)
He also held offers from West Virginia, Pitt, Rutgers, Virginia Tech, and Syracuse. That offer is sure to grow as he plays out the rest of junior season.
At 6'1, he's another long, lanky safety cornerback that Terry Smith has loved to recruit throughout his time at Penn State. Payne also plays receiver at the high school level, so he does have some solid ball skills that will help him in the college game.
247 Sports' Brian Dohn had this to say about the Payne:
Has length on big frame to play in the secondary. Can easily add 20 pounds to his frame. Verified 11.53 in 100 meters will continue to improve later in his career. During live evaluations in spring and summer, change of direction and desire to compete stood out. Smart, intelligent on and off field. Has plus balls skills. Shows ability to open his hips to run with receiver. Sound technique with ability to press and re-routing receivers. Comfortable and smooth in his back pedal. Adding strength throughout frame is needed, and will help with top end speed. Has to show he can be effective in run support.
Payne is commit No. 2 for Penn State in the 2023 class, joining five-star offensive lineman Alex Birchmeier. The class now sits at No. 7 nationally.
