Penn State released its first 2016 depth chart of the season Tuesday morning. It largely reflects what we had been hearing out of training camp, but there is still plenty take take away from what we can see on it.

The biggest position of intrigue would have been the quarterback position had head coach James Franklin not announced Trace McSorley as the starter last week. Still, there are a number of other interesting position battles on both lines, on special teams, and at key depth positions.

Some highlights:

  • Kevin Givens getting the start at defensive tackle after a great off season and fall camp.
  • True freshman Connor McGovern and Michal Menet both make the depth chart as backups on the offensive line. Classmate Will Fries shows up as third string.
  • Saquon Barkley could very well be returning kickoffs.
  • True freshman punter Blake Gillikin has won the starting job.
  • Andre Robinson beat out Mark Allen for the backup running back position.
  • The linebacker depth is what we thought. Terrifying.
