With the fall semester kicking off today in Happy Valley, Lions247 is reporting that redshirt freshman cornerback T.J. Johnson has left the program and is pursuing a transfer. According to Sean Fitz, Johnson started the month on the 105-man roster, but has not practiced recently.
Johnson, a former three-star recruit, was a late addition to the 2016 class, announcing his verbal commitment just a day before signing day, and right after a last minute official visit.
After redshirting during the 2016 season, Johnson found himself in a crowded secondary. Including Johnson, the Nittany Lions have eight scholarship cornerbacks with eligibility beyond next season currently on the roster, with two more expected to sign in the 2018 class. Despite a standout performance at April's Blue-White scrimmage, Johnson likely found himself far enough down the depth chart, and is looking for a bigger role than seems likely at Penn State.
