Per Lions247, Penn State is hiring Maryland offensive line coach Tyler Bowen to fill one of the vacant assistant coaching roles. Bowen was a graduate assistant for the Nittany Lions during the 2014 season. Currently, the open assistant positions are quarterbacks coach and running backs coach, though that could easily change depending on who is hired as the new offensive coordinator.
Bowen played his college ball at Maryland as an offensive lineman while James Franklin was the Terps' offensive coordinator and assistant head coach. He was a graduate assistant for Maryland from 2010-2012, then coached tight ends for Towson in 2013.
After leaving State College, he served as Joe Moorhead's offensive line coach at Fordham, and then as Andrew Breiner's offensive coordinator before heading back to Maryland for the 2017 season.
It's hard to say which position he'll end up coaching with the offensive coordinator position still unfilled, but that will likely be cleared up soon. He's likely to have a fairly important role in the offense, however. He clearly has plenty of knowledge regarding Moorhead's system, which is one that the staff would surely like to replicate in some way moving forward.
UPDATE (12/1, 5:53 pm)- With the news that Ricky Rahne has been promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Bowen has been named the new tight ends coach.
Bowen has received high praise nearly everywhere he's gone in his young coaching career, particularly from Maryland head coach D.J. Durkin.
"Tyler Bowen's been great. He's doing a great job with our guys...I think he's a bright young star in this profession. You look at the success of places he's been and what they've done. He has a great understanding of the game. He's an O-line coach that's also called plays. He's been calling plays and coordinating offense, which I think really helps see the big picture. He's doing a great job with our guys."
One of his linemen, center Brendan Moore, also had high praise for his coach ahead of the 2017 season.
"[Bowen's] been here for a very short time, and you can already tell that he's a ridiculously good coach, at least in my opinion," Moore said.
It's also worth noting that Bowen was the lead recruiter for highly-regarded offensive tackle Rasheed Walker, who is a target of both Penn State and Maryland. As long as there is space to take him, this would seem to be a big deal in terms of getting Walker to Happy Valley.
