The wait for a second Penn State Heisman Trophy winner will go on for at least one more season. Nittany Lion running back Saquon Barkley was not among the three finalists for the 2017 edition of the award announced earlier this evening. The overwhelming favorite, Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield will be joined at the ceremony in New York City by Louisville QB, and 2016 winner Lamar Jackson, and Stanford RB Bryce Love.
Barkley ran for 1,134 yards and 16 touchdowns and aught 47 passes for 594 yards and three scores during his junior campaign, which could be his final one in Happy Valley before he jumps to the NFL. Additionally, Barkley was a dynamic return man, taking two kickoffs to the house this season.
The Nittany Lions' star running back was named the Big Ten's Offensive Player, Running Back, and Return Specialist of the Year. He is also a finalist for the Doak Walker, Maxwell, and Walter Camp awards. The former goes to the nation's top running back, and the latter two are awarded to the nation's best player.
