Former Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti has signed a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints per a tweet from his agent, Michael McCartney. Mauti has spent the last three seasons with the Saints and prior to last season, signed a one-year deal with the team. Mauti will battle for playing time at linebacker, but his biggest presence throughout most of his NFL career has been on special teams where he served as a team captain in 2016.
A Louisiana native, Mauti missed much of the 2016 season and his career was in jeopardy while dealing with the effects of ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease. Mauti was cut by the Saints after training camp and worked out for former Penn State coach Bill O’Brien with the Houston Texans, but ultimately re-signed with the Saints after an injury to another former Penn State linebacker, Nathan Stupar. Mauti finished the 2017 season with 11 tackles.
