Classes may have just ended for the majority of Penn State students, but they're just getting started for a few of the newest Nittany Lion signees. The news was first reported by BlueWhiteIllustrated.com.
Defensive tackles Judge Culpepper and P.J. Mustipher, along with tight end Pat Freiermuth, and quarterback Will Levis, will join the Nittany Lions for the first summer session. In the past, the majority of the freshman class arrived on campus in late-June for the second summer session.
Levis is headed for a redshirt barring some drastic injuries at quarterback, but Culpepper, Freiermuth, and Mustipher could springboard the time with the program into some early playing time.
With the top three defensive tackles from 2017 lost to graduation, Mustipher and Culpepper could potentially crack the rotation at a relatively thin position group.
Freiermuth enters a tight end battle that seems to be just as wide open as it was when spring ball began. Injuries prevented some of the veterans from getting good looks, amd Freiermuth has a shot to quickly close the gap. Some of his top competition could come from classmate Zack Kuntz. The Camp Hill, PA native has been on campus since the start of the Spring semester in January.
This quartet will join the six freshmen (Kuntz, Micah Parsons, Jesse Luketa, Nick Tarburton, Trent Gordon, and Isaiah Humphries) who enrolled earlier this year. The remaining 13 signees from the Class of 2018 will arrive on campus in late-June for the second summer session. Those classes begin on June 27.
