Four-plus years into his tenure as the head boss at Penn State, James Franklin now ranks among the best coaches in the nation, according to an annual poll by CBS Sports. Coming in at No. 10 in the latest version, Franklin is surrounded by coaches such as Kirby Smart/Mike Gundy (cool!) and Chip Kelly/Bill Snyder (hmmmm). Each year CBS sorts the 65 head coaches of the biggest college football programs in the nation, and Tom Fornelli explains their decision-making process this way:

...we ranked all 65 coaches (including Notre Dame's Brian Kelly) individually and tallied the results. I'm not sure how my colleagues based their rankings, but my approach was likely similar to theirs. I took into account all that a coach has accomplished, and then I considered which coach I'd want to hire the most were I an athletic director with deep pockets and a vacancy to fill.

Obviously since the ranking is completely subjective, there are bound to be some wonky choices, like Kelly and Snyder in the top-15, and Kirk Ferentz in the top-25 somehow. Regardless, as the Nittany Lions continue to trend up, expect Franklin to maintain his spot as one of the most notable, prominent, and in-demand head coaches in the nation.
