Monday was a big day for the four newest Nittany Lions. Not only did Will Levis, Pat Freirermuth, Judge Culpepper, and P.J. Mustipher begin their Penn State academic careers, they were also assigned their new jersey numbers.
- QB Will Levis - No. 17
- TE Pat Freiermuth - No. 87
- DT Judge Culpepper - No. 88
- DT P.J. Mustipher - No. 93
Culpepper wearing No. 88 as a defensive tackle may stand out, but the Florida native wore the same jersey during his high school career. The No. 88 jersey was of course most recently worn by Mike Gesicki.
A Massachusetts native, it's safe to assume Freiermuth is pretty excited about sharing a number with another fairly good tight who plays in the Boston area. No. 87 was worn by Dae'lun Darien during the 2017 season, but the redshirt sophomore is now rocking No. 41 after switching to linebacker.
Levis will be sharing the No. 17 with safety Garrett Taylor. Nittany Lion fans will remember another pretty good No. 17 QB, Daryll Clark.
No. 93 will be shared by newcomer Mustipher and junior punter Blake Gillikin. The Maryland native has a shot to play as a freshman, but we can already rule him out of any duties on the punt team.
