Penn State Rushing Chart (Maryland): Sanders Leads the Way, Slade Shows the Future is Bright

Nov 24, 2018; University Park, PA, USA; Penn State Nittany Lions running back Miles Sanders (24) runs with the ball while avoiding a tackle from Maryland Terrapins defensive back Antoine Brooks Jr (25) during the third quarter at Beaver Stadium. Penn State defeated Maryland 38-3.

Welcome back to the Penn State rushing chart. Each week we'll show you all of the different runners' charts from the most recent game, as well as their cumulative stats for the season. There may be a few differences here and there from the stat lines you see on ESPN, Sports Reference, or elsewhere, but I'll try to make sure to explain each of those differences below.

Miles Sanders put the cap on what was an excellent regular season, his first as a collegiate starting running back. The junior did everything that was asked of him, and truly paved his own path separate of Saquon Barkley, while also showing that he learned plenty from his predecessor. If he chooses to jump to the NFL, he'll do so with plenty of highlights to take with him. But as we saw on Saturday, should Sanders opt for that route, the running back room is in good hands moving forward.

  • Though greatly bolstered by two 30-plus yard runs, Miles Sanders was excellent once again for Penn State. He ran decisively and did a great job taking advantage of the holes the offensive line was opening up for him. He has shown throughout the season that he is truly a complete back (though it's hard to truly judge his receiving abilities due to a lack of involvement). It would be great to have him back in 2019 for what could be a truly magical season, but no one would fault the junior tailback for heading off to the NFL now. He's been a pleasure to watch.
  • Hello there, Ricky Slade. The true freshman had his best day since his performance against Illinois and showed off many of the skills that made him such a sought-after recruit. He showed speed in getting to the edge, an ability to sneak through holes in the offensive line, elusiveness in evading defenders, and a nose for the end zone. This kid is going to be special.
  • As always, Tommy Stevens's runs were all documented here, even if they came while he was under center. The backup quarterback and potential 2019 starter once again showed why he is so dangerous on the ground. It wasn't quite the brutality he inflicted upon the Terps last season, but Stevens used his power and speed to break free once more in the open field.
  • Journey Brown continues to show that he should be a valuable piece of the picture moving forward in the running back room. A modest, but solid few carries for the speedy redshirt freshman.
  • Great to see Johnathan Thomas get a few more carries on Senior Day. He's bounced around from offense to defense back to offense and hasn't complained once. It wasn't a statistically prolific career for the former four-star prospect, but he was clearly loved by his teammates. Cool to see him pick up a few more yards in his final home game.
  • Here's how the Lions' run game looked by down:
    • 1st Down: 24 attempts, 182 yards, 7.6 YPC, 2 TD (4 QB runs, 20 RB runs)
    • 2nd Down: 16 attempts, 101 yards, 6.3 YPC, 2 TD, 1 fumble (5 QB runs, 11 RB runs)
    • 3rd Down: 4 attempts, 27 yards, 6.8 YPC (2 QB runs, 2 RB runs)

  • When Penn State got blown out by Michigan, there was a play very early on in the game that gave us all the information we needed about McSorley's injury and severity of it. On third down, McSorley took off to run for the first down, and when a defender approached him right at the sticks, the quarterback chose to slide instead of bowling through the defender or juking to his left which was wide open. His clear discomfort showed that he wasn't himself. Against Maryland, there were two plays that again showed how much the injury was bothering him (hint, it was bothering him a lot less this time)—his third-down run when he plowed into two defenders to fight for the necessary yardage, and his 20-yard touchdown scamper right up the gut. Welcome back, Trace.
  • Other than those two runs, it wasn't a huge day on the ground for McSorley, but it was an incredibly effective one, averaging 7.1 yards per carry overall.
  • McSorley was sacked once for a loss of seven yards.
