Coming off of a 9-4 season in 2018, and losing record setting quarterback Trace McSorley to graduation certainly has raised some questions around the college football world about where the Lions go in 2019 and beyond. Not only must they replace McSorley's production on offense, but also running back Miles Sanders, and a pair of three-year starters along the offensive line in Ryan Bates and Connor McGovern. There are also big holes to fill on the defensive line with the early departures of Kevin Givens and Shareef Miller. There are jobs open in the secondary at safety and cornerback as well.
With all of that said, elite level recruiting has positioned Penn State to weather those losses by plugging in some fantastic, albeit unproven talent. The question remains how quickly those new faces can get acclimated to bigger roles.
Penn State's 8.5 wins ranks third in the Big Ten East behind Ohio State (10) and Michigan (9.5). Wisconsin (8.5) is the only other conference team listed in the early going.
