With just two games remaining in the regular season (time flies), bowl pictures are starting to become a bit more clear. For the Nittany Lions, these next few weeks will go a long way in deciding which warm-weather city they'll be spending New Years in.
4. Holiday bowl - Brett McMurphy, Stadium
- Penn State vs. USC
- SDCCU Stadium, San Diego, California - Dec. 27
A rematch of the 2016 Rose Bowl would be terrific, but this version of USC is far from the one Sam Darnold led. The Trojans are shaky, and who knows what their mindset will be like in what should be Clay Helton's final game as head coach. While getting to San Diego would be fun, there are just better matchups to hope for.
3. Citrus Bowl - KYLE BONAGURA, ESPN
- Penn State vs. Florida
- Camping World Stadium, Orlando, Florida - Jan. 1
Seeing the Nittany Lions take on the Gators would be fun, but Penn State was just in the Citrus Bowl. While Orlando is great, you should always hope for something a little different in each bowl game. Still, it would be a great chance for the coaching staff to get down to Florida and hopefully connect with some recruits.
2. Outback bowl - MARK Schlabach, ESPN, Brad Crawford, 247 Sports, & Jerry Palm, CBS Sports
- Penn State vs. Texas A&M
- Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, Florida - Jan. 1
It's been over a decade since these two teams last met, so points here for being something new and unique. The Aggies do have three loses, but they're all to quality opponents in Clemson, Auburn, and Alabama. They almost certainly will fall to LSU before it's all said and done, but they will be the best four-loss team in the country, or at least would have the four "best losses" in the country. A Penn State win here would give everyone a good idea of how deep the SEC really is.
1. Rose Bowl - Jason Kirk, Banner Society
- Penn State vs. Oregon
- Rose Bowl Stadium, Pasadena, California - Jan. 1
Here's the one everybody is hoping for. Penn State's path to the Rose Bowl became a lot clearer with Minnesota's loss at Iowa. If the Gophers fall to Wisconsin, you may want to start looking into hotel reservations in Pasadena. The Ducks have been on fire lately, thanks in part to resurgent, former Nittany Lion Juwan Johnson. This matchup would be a high-scoring, fast-paced thrill ride that could rival the last time the Nittany Lions found themselves in this game.
