Coming off of a 34-27 victory over Indiana on Saturday, Penn State checks in at No. 8 in the latest edition of the College Football Playoff rankings released on Tuesday evening. That is up one from last week's ranking of No. 9.
The playoff spots remain unchanged with LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, and Georgia making up the top-four, with Alabama and Oregon right behind at the fifth and six spots.
The Nittany Lions claim two quality wins, with both Iowa (No. 17) and Michigan (No. 13) ranked, and the lone loss coming to Minnesota, who fell to No. 10 after dropping its first game of the year on Saturday against the Hawkeyes.
Despite the tough odds, a win Saturday would almost certainly put the Lions right back in the thick of the playoff race. A resumé with a pair of top-20 wins, as well as a massive upset on the road in Columbus would be tough for any one-loss team to match. The win would also virtually clinch the Big Ten East, with only the regular-season finale vs. Rutgers left. That would give Penn State one more chance at another quality victory in the Big Ten Championship game.
The Nittany Lions and Buckeyes kick off at noon ET on Saturday. The game will be broadcast on Fox.
