Senior offensive tackle Will Fries is getting reps at guard, according to James Franklin. The Nittany Lion head coach shared the news during this week's Coaches Show.
Fries has been a staple of the Nittany Lion offensive line for three seasons, starting his first game back in 2017. He's started 35 games since then, mostly at right tackle. He was named All-Big Ten honorable last season.
Franklin went on to say that Fries projects as a guard at the next level, so getting some reps at the position should help his NFL aspirations. He also noted that Caedan Wallace has been playing well, so it's possible this is a way to get both offensive linemen on the field at the same time.
The Nittany Lions are well off at guard, with CJ Thorpe and Mike Miranda likely holding down both starting spots, with former four-star JUCO prospect Anthony Whigan serving as a primary backup. Still, depth will be more important than ever this season as we've seen teams around the country lose players or position groups due to COVID-19 quarantines or positive tests.
