As Watch List season comes to a close, linebacker Micah Parsons and running back Journey Brown each earned another accolade. Both players were named to the Maxwell Award Watch List that is presented to the best all-around college football player. The award is presented by the Maxwell Football Club and began back in 1937. The award is voted on by head coaches, members of the Maxwell Football Club, and a variety of sports media members.
This is the fourth watch list for Parsons who has been named to the Nagurski, Bednarik, and Butkus Awards. Parsons has earned all the preseason hype that has given the Nittany Lions their latest face for Linebacker U. The Pennsylvania product was one of the biggest recruiting wins of James Franklin's career and he has not disappointed. Parsons has drawn comparisons to many great Penn State linebackers and will look to cement his place in Nittany Lion lore in 2020.
As for Brown, this is the third watch list he has been recognized on along with the Doak Walker and Paul Hourning Awards. At the Nittany Lions Award banquet, Brown was presented with the Tim Shaw Thrive Award. This is an award that is given to a player that has overcome adversities and inspiring to his teammates.
Seven Penn State players have been presented the Maxwell Award, with Larry Johnson being the most recent in 2005. No defensive player has won the award since Manti Te'o of Notre Dame won the award in 2012. Brown looks to become the first running back to win the award since Derrick Henry of Alabama won the award in 2015.
