Penn State safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator Tim Banks is joining Josh Heupel's staff as Tennessee's next defensive coordinator, according to a report from Yahoo's Pete Thamel.

A Detroit, Michigan native, Banks joined the Penn State staff in 2016 after four seasons at Illinois. As the Nittany Lions' safeties coach, he's had three players selected in the NFL Draft, Troy Apke, Marcus Allen, and Nick Scott. This season, he helped both Lamont Wade and Jaquan Brisker earn All-Big Ten honors.
An ace recruiter, Banks has been key in helping Penn State land a litany of high-profile prospects out of the greater-Detroit area. Four members of Penn State's 2021 recruiting class hail from the Great Lake State, with Banks serving as each's primary recruiter.
Banks is heading into a tough situation at Tennessee, who overhauled their coaching staff after Jeremy Pruitt both underperformed on the field, and allegedly dropped the (McDonald's) bag for a handful of recruits.
Tim Banks is the third member of Penn State's coaching staff to move on from the program this offseason, joining Kirk Ciarrocca (fired) and Tyler Bowen (Jacksonville Jaguars). A national search will now begin for a new safeties coach.
