Penn State safety/linebacker Jonathan Sutherland will return for his sixth season with the Nittany Lions in 2022, taking advantage of an extra year of eligibility from the Coronavirus pandemic.

A program leader and special teams ace, Sutherland is the second Nittany Lion returning for a sixth year, joining quarterback and fellow three-time team captain Sean Clifford.

In nine games in 2021, Sutherland has 19 tackles — two for loss — one interception and one pass breakup.

Sutherland saw action at linebacker this season, and he could play an even bigger role at the position for the Nittany Lions in 2022 with Brandon Smith and Ellis Brooks moving on to the NFL Draft.
