Liam Folkes is again a Nittany Lion tournament hero. For the second time in three years, the junior forward scored a huge goal for Penn State in overtime versus Wisconsin. Two years ago in Joe Louis Arena it won the Big Ten, this year it sends the Lions into the Big Ten semifinals.
Penn State dropped the series opener 4-3 on Friday night after a late goal snuck past Peyton Jones. Facing elimination, they were able to rally for a big 6-2 win on Saturday to force a decisive game three Sunday at Pegula.
The Nittany Lions took the lead just 78 seconds into the game on a Denis Smirnov goal before Wisconsin evened things up less than five minutes later. Cole Hults gave Penn State a lead once again 4:09 into the second, but pair of Badger goals gave them the lead halfway through the second period. Alex Limoges tied things one again with just over one minute to play in the middle frame. A scoreless third set the stage for Folkes heroics.
Penn State will travel to Columbus for next weekend's single elimination semifinal against the top seeded Ohio State Buckeyes. The game will faceoff at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, and air on BTN.
