Despite multiple indications from Cael Sanderson that Nick Suriano will be ready for Nationals, the team has ruled him out for the NCAA Tournament. The news deals a blow to Penn State's title hopes, though it doesn't rule them out altogether. The news is equally devastating for Suriano, who figured to be one of the favorites at the weight.
We would like to announce at this time that FR 125-pounder Nick Suriano will not be able to compete in this year's NCAA Championships.— pennstateWREST (@pennstateWREST) March 15, 2017
His only healthy loss this year was against 1-seed Thomas Gilman, and Suriano showed the kind of talent that could get him deep into the tournament. His season included wins over 4-seed Darian Cruz, 5-seed Tim Lambert, and 6-seed Ethan Lizak. While injuries have derailed his season and prevented a chance for him to become a 4-time All-American, Suriano has the chance to enter next season as the top wrestler at 125 pounds.
This leaves Penn State with eight wrestlers for Nationals, and the impact to the team race will be posted about later on Roar Lions Roar, so stay tuned.
