A matter of formality has become official: Bo Nickal is the 2019 Dan Hodge Trophy winner for the nation's most outstanding collegiate wrestler. Nickal capped off his illustrious Penn State career with his third NCAA individual championship as part of a 30-0 senior season, which included 18 pins and nine major decisions. For his career Nickal was 120-3. Teammate and fellow senior Jason Nolf finished second to Nickal.

The college wrestling equivalent to the Heisman Trophy, the Hodge is awarded based on seven criteria: record, number of pins, dominance, past credentials, quality of competition, sportsmanship/citizenship, and heart. Nickal is the fourth Nittany Lion to win the award, and Penn State's sixth winner overall, including the last three. Past winners include Zain Retherford (2017/2018), David Taylor (2012/2014), and Kerry McCoy (1997).
