Wrestling is back.
The Nittany Lion Wrestling Club announced on Tuesday that they will be hosting a wrestling event that will feature some familiar Penn State alumni. The event will be streamed on Rokfin and begin at 8:00 p.m. EST on Saturday, September 19. So far, the announced matches are (NLWC members in bold):
- Bo Nickal vs. Alex Dieringer
- Kyle Snyder vs. Michael Macchiavello
- Jason Nolf vs. Darren McFadden
- Zain Retherford vs. Alec Pantaleo
- Thomas Gilman vs. Darian Cruz
- Greg Kerkvliet vs. Youssif Hemida
- Nick Nevills vs. Jordan Wood
- Jennifer Page vs. Desiree Zavala
- Jane Valencia vs. Lauren Louive
- Also announced to compete: Vincenzo Joseph, Bekzod Abdurakhmonov, Malik Amine, and Domenic Abounader
The featured matchup of the event is sure to be Bo Nickal vs. Alex Dieringer. They both have had exceptional NCAA careers, and both have been very successful in international freestyle. Nickal is the 2019 U-23 World Championship and 2019 World Team Trials champion, while Dieringer was the 2019 World Team Trials champion at 79 kg. It's unclear what weight this match will take place at, but it should be an excellent way to cap off a great night of wrestling.
NLWC resident Kyle Snyder will take on 2019 NCAA champion Mike Macchiavello, and yes it's very satisfying to write NLWC resident in front of Kyle Snyder's name. Three-time NCAA champion Jason Nolf will take on Darren McFadden. Two-time Team USA World team member Zain Retherford will face Alec Pantaleo. Thomas Gilman will take on the 2017 NCAA champion Darian Cruz in a rematch from the NCAA semifinals when Cruz beat Gilman.
Penn State fans can get an early look at projected heavyweight starter Greg Kerkvliet, as he takes on a U23 world silver medalist and NCAA All-American in Youssif Hemida. Nick Nevills will take on Jordan Wood, they had a very exciting encounter during the 2018 dual versus Lehigh when Nevills got a third-period ride-out to beat Wood.
There are set to be two women's freestyle matches as well. Jennifer Page will take on Desiree Zavala. Page has been around Team USA and been competing in freestyle for nearly a decade. She was a 2014 US Open champion and 2013 Junior World bronze medalist. Zavala was the 2019 World Team Trials runner-up to Kayla Miracle. Jane Valencia is the first female wrestler to ever qualify for the Olympics from Mexico, and she will be taking on the 2019 Final X finalist Lauren Louive.
The NLWC is expected to announce more matches as well, with Vincenzo Joseph, Bekzod Abdurakhmonov, Malik Amine, and Domenic Abounader also slated to compete at the event. It should be an excellent night of wrestling in Happy Valley.
