Chris Ash came to Rutgers with a passion to turn around a moribund college football program in a state that's bleeding football talent and fan interest.
"I want to build a first-class program here, a program that the university, the state of New Jersey, high school coaches and high school players can be proud to say that this program is theirs and they want to come here and be a part of it," Ash said.
His assistant coaching pedigree is impressive. During his five years coaching in the Big Ten, Ash was a part of four Big Ten championship teams. Prior to New Jersey, he worked in Columbus with Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer.
And then Ash landed at Rutgers in December 2015, signing a five-year deal and a chance to start something fresh and new, yes? In his first season, Ash is experiencing one of the worst college football performances by a Power 5 Conference team.
They're 2-8. Winless in the Big Ten. Have beaten Howard and New Mexico. Got famously rocketed into space by Michigan, 78-0. Demolished by Michigan State, 49-0, to give the Spartans their first conference victory. Blasted by Ohio State, 58-0.
Rough season for Ash. And at times, his face has shown it. What follows next are the many faces of Chris Ash during this horror show of a 2016 Rutgers football season, as captured by our friends at USAToday Sports.
