Rank Team Record/Previous Game Result

Explanation

1

Last Week: 1

Penn State

Points: 140

4-0

Last Week:
21-19 win over Iowa
Exhale, Penn State fans. The Nittany Lions went into Kinnick for a night game against the Hawkeyes and walked away winners on a walk-off touchdown. It was hardly comfortable for a team that had yet to be challenged in any tangible way thus far in 2017. With both the offense and defense seemingly performing at elite levels, this team has earned this top spot. (Next Week: vs. Indiana)

2

Last Week: 3

Wisconsin

Points: 122

3-0

The Badgers sat idle in week four, but thanks to a less-than-convincing Michigan performance against Purdue, they jump up a spot to No. 2 overall.  (Next Week: vs. Northwestern)

3

Last Week: 4

Ohio State

Points: 120

3-1

Last Week:
54-21 win over UNLV
Just like in 2014 after they lost to Virginia Tech, the Buckeyes are looking fearsome in the wake of a defeat once again. They haven't played anyone of note since the Oklahoma game, but the offense seems to at least be mostly back on track. And now that it is, they get to jump back into Big Ten play with a huge showdown at...Rutgers. (Next week: @ Rutgers)

4

Last Week: 2

Michigan

Points: 118

4-0

Last Week:
28-10 win over Purdue
The Boilermakers looked like they were going to give Michigan trouble through most of the first two quarters, but the defense was able to shut Jeff Brohm's offense down, and the offense did enough to win. But Wilton Speight's injury looms large and fueled their drop in our rankings. Luckily they have a bye week for him to rest up. (Next Week: BYE)

5

Last Week: 5

Iowa

Points: 95

3-1

Last Week:
21-19 loss to No. 4 Penn State
Iowa showed more in their loss to Penn State in any other game this season. They surrendered 500+ total yards, but they executed their gameplan to a T. The question now will be whether or not they can get themselves ramped back up after a crushing, last-second loss. (Next Week: @ Michigan State)

6

Last Week: 7

Minnesota

Points: 86

3-0

Last Week:

The Gophers benefit from those above them looking ordinary. Their matchup with another run-heavy team in Maryland will be an interesting one. (Next Week: vs. Maryland)

7

Last Week: 10

Indiana

Points: 70

2-1

Last Week:
52-17 win over Georgia Southern
The Hoosiers smacked Georgia Southern, so they jump back up three spots in the rankings. Now they get the pleasure of facing their second top-ten team of the season- and it's still September! (Next Week: @ No. 4 Penn State)

8

Last Week: 11

Northwestern

Points: 62

2-1

Last Week:

The Wildcats got a much-needed break last week. Hopefully they used a good portion of it planning for Wisconsin, because with the way Clayton Thorson and company have looked so far, they could be in for a rough, rough Saturday.  (Next Week: @ No. 10 Wisconsin)

9

Last Week: 9

Michigan State

Points: 58

2-1

Last Week:
38-18 loss to Notre Dame
Maybe Notre Dame is good. We don't really know. But we do know that Michigan State was hoping for a better showing than that. The question now will be who can rebound from a big loss better, Sparty or Iowa? (Next Week: vs. Iowa)

T-10

Last Week: 8

Purdue

Points: 56

2-2

Last Week:
28-10 loss to No. 8 Michigan
Poor Purdue. They looked like they were going to make things very interesting against Michigan, but the Wolverines were just too talented. Still, this is an exciting team that's going to beat someone they're not supposed to. Time to rest up for the final stretch. (Next Week: BYE)

T-10

Last Week: 6

Maryland

Points: 56

2-1

Last Week:
38-10 loss to UCF
The Terps took a huge blow this week when quarterback Kasim Hill left due to an apparent leg injury. The freshman had been very solid through a few games, but now seems primed to miss an extended period of time. The Maryland run offense can still be potent, but it's far less effective when it's being run by a third-string quarterback. (Next Week: @ Minnesota)

12

Last Week: 12

Nebraska

Points: 37

2-2

Last Week:
27-17 win over Rutgers
The Cornhuskers grabbed a win in what is officially college football's newest and hottest rivalry game. Can they keep in going against the second-worst team in the Big Ten? Only time will tell! (Next Week: @ Illinois)

13

Last Week: 14

Illinois

Points: 17

2-1

Last Week:
BYE
C'mon, Illinois. Nebraska is feeling too confident after their rivalry win over Rutgers. Bring them back to Earth. (Next Week: vs. Nebraska)

14

Last Week: 13

Rutgers

Points: 13

1-3

Last Week:
27-17 loss to Nebraska
The defense may still be okay, but who knows anymore. (Next Week: vs. No. 11 Ohio State)
