We learned nothing from last year and I cackling. (Gonna bookmark this in case I have to delete in 8 months)
Oh woof. Give me the under on that but not by much.
If you're going to hold Franklin losing to Minnesota, Northwestern, and Michigan against him, then you have to hold Ferentz never beating Franklin against him. And you would have to hold Pat Fitzgerald and Harbaugh losing to Franklin against them as well, so wouldn't that be a wash?
And it does happen to top five coaches. Saban lost to Hugh Freeze twice, which is more times than Franklin has lost to Pat Fitzgerald. Does that mean Freeze is a better coach? Dabo has lost to Dino Babers and Pat Narduzzi as many times as Franklin has lost to Fitzgerald and Fleck. Upsets happen.
PJ Fleck is a great coach, but I'd argue what James had done at Vandy was more impressive than PJ at Minnesota. Scott Frost has been a head coach for four seasons and has had a losing record in three of them. Pat Fitzgerald is a good coach, but the majority of his seasons have been mediocre with a few fantastic runs. Jim Harbaugh has never even won his division and it's hard to argue his program is on the rise like Penn State is. It's hard for me to look at any of these facts and say any of these coaches are better or have accomplished more than Franklin.
What coaches do you think are better than him? They all have to be in the West since Ryan Day isn’t proven enough just yet.
I think the coaching is very clearly there and so do many other experts in the arena. Bruce Feldman has Franklin as the third-best coach in the country, while I don't necessarily agree, I think he's top five without a doubt. The biggest difference between us and every other playoff contender is that we have another powerhouse in our division. Nobody else has that. That's a super big piece of this puzzle. If we're going to catch Ohio State, we need to start spending like them too or else we're doomed to play catch up every year.
It absolutely does. Either that or the mac and cheese they have there does some crazy things to my body.
Well then I guess it depends what your long-term expectations are for the program? Compete with the best of the best, or just stay on par or slightly behind what’s in the division?
The reason we need to upgrade is because other major programs have something better. If Penn State wants to become one of the major players, it needs to at least match what they have.
I think the only real position group Minnesota had that was better than ours was receivers. We'll see what Tanner Morgan can do now that Kirk is over here, but I'm not confident he's the better quarterback.
As much as it pains me to say it, I think he has to be behind Dan Mullen right now. Mullen's done so much between his time as an assistant, turning MSU into a program that fires its head coach after a winning season, and now fixing the mess at Florida. If Franklin can win 10 games again though, I think he moves to No. 3.
Also, all this talk about how important Scott Cochran has been to Alabama's success is really making me look at strength coaches in a new light. I always knew DG was important, but I think I was still really undervaluing all he does.
DG!! Man, that dude is an animal.
Big Milk strikes again!
We need someone to commit because of Old Coaly
